CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Just after Western Silk captured her first Gold Elimination victory in the fifth race, Mohawk Racetrack fans were treated to a display of lightning that rivaled the track’s annual fireworks demonstration.
As a result of the electrical storm the racing program was cancelled, and the second two-year-old pacing filly Gold Elimination and the $130,000 three-year-old pacing colt Gold Final were postponed until Monday. The $130,000 Gold Final, with all post positions remaining the same, will go postward at 6:30 pm and the pacing filly elimination will follow at 6:45 p.m. Both races will be held as non-wagering events prior to the regularly scheduled Monday program, which gets underway at 7:20 p.m.
While her peers duke it out on Monday, Western Silk will be relaxing in her stall at trainer Casie Coleman’s barn, reveling in a job well done. The Western Terror lass and driver Mark MacDonald clawed their way up the outside, and then rocketed down the stretch to claim a one and one-half length victory in a smart 1:53.1.
Precious Cammill also closed sharply to finish second, while pacesetter Tiz To Dream finished third. Fourth and fifth-place finishers Tymal Dalia and Euphrosini also advanced to the Gold Final on Sunday, Aug. 16.
Cambridge resident Coleman trains Western Silk for her partner Tom Hill of Lancashire, GB. A $50,000 acquisition from last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, Western Silk now has two wins and one third through four starts for earnings of $34,280.
The draw for the $130,000 Gold Final will take place following Monday’s elimination.
