WILKES-BARRE, PA — Although the Pocono Downs surface was rain-soaked, there was nothing dreary about the performance turned in by three-year-old trotting filly sensation Bee A Magician in the Saturday, Oct. 19 Breeders Crown Final.
Ontario-sired Bee A Magician floated along on the outside through the opening quarter, clocked in :27 by Frau Blucher, and then stepped to the front as the fillies rolled by the grandstand for the first time. Bee A Magician sailed effortlessly through a :55.2 half and 1:24 three-quarters and then, without any apparent urging from driver Brian Sears, accelerated away from the field to reach the finish four and one-half lengths on top in 1:52.4. Frau Blucher and Southwind Cocoa battled into second and third in the $500,000 Final.
“That was a hell of a mile on a sloppy track Saturday night,” said Ottawa, ON resident Mel Hartman, who shares ownership of Bee A Magician with Herb Liverman of Miami Beach, FL and David McDuffee of Delray Beach, FL.
“It looked like — in her elimination and in the final — he was taking her for a ride around the track in a training mile,” added Hartman.
The win was Bee A Magician’s sixteenth straight in a streak that stretches back to the Ontario Sires Stakes two-year-old filly trot Super Final last November. Along with the Breeders Crown, Bee A Magician defended her OSS Super Final title in 2013 and captured the Hambletonian Oaks, Del Miller Memorial, Elegantimage and Casual Breeze Stakes. In her two-year racing career the daughter of Kadabra and Beehive has won 25 of 28 starts and earned $2.1 million.
“People are talking that she’s the best trotting filly of all time,” noted Hartman. “She’s made Ontario proud, that’s for sure.”
The Number 1 ranked horse in harness racing’s top 10 poll since mid-August, Bee A Magician has sewn up the sophomore trotting filly title on both sides of the border and is a favourite for Horse of the Year.
Trained by Richard “Nifty” Norman, Bee A Magician will wrap up her sophomore campaign in the Nov. 30 Moni Maker at The Meadowlands in New Jersey, and her connections intend to bring the filly back to the races for her four-year-old season.
“We are thinking of trying to find another race for her, because it’s six weeks until the Moni Maker,” added Hartman. “We talked about supplementing to the Matron (Nov. 10 and 17 at Dover Downs) or something, but it’s up to Nifty.
“Then she’ll have a good couple of months off before he starts back with her.”
Next season Bee A Magician could face off against the Hartman and McDuffee-owned Spider Blue Chip, who captured the three-year-old male trotter Breeders Crown with a 1:53.3 effort, giving the owners a sweep of the sophomore trotting divisions. Hartman also co-owns two-year-old trotting filly runner-up Struck By Lindy.
“That was a hell of a night on Saturday,” reflects the long-time owner. “I don’t know how I’m going to repeat that.”
With six yearlings already purchased, and his eye on several others entered in the remaining sales, Hartman is doing his best to replicate this year’s success and looking forward to what the future holds for Bee A Magician.
