CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — With the first inside post she has drawn for any Gold Final in her young career, two-year-old trotting filly Circles simply cruised to victory at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.
Regular reinsman Jacques Hebert guided Circles into position at Post 5 when the starter called the field for the $130,000 Gold Final, and moved the filly smartly away from the gate. The fan favourites reached the opening eighth in :13.2, with Frisky Strike on their right flank and Destinys Magic tucking into the pocket.
Circles carried on to a :27.4 first quarter, a :56.2 half and a 1:25.4 three-quarters, and had opened up a five length lead by the time she reached the 1:41.1 seven-eighths. Trotting down the lane all alone, Circles and Hebert sailed under the wire four and one-quarter lengths on top in 1:57.
Cool Creek Breeze, owned by trainer Ben Baillargeon of Rockwood and breeder Diane Ingham of Mount Pleasant, closed sharply in the stretch to earn the second-place finisher’s share and her stablemate from the Baillargeon barn, Tyrany Seelster, got up for third, edging out Kylie Hall. Frisky Strike, in spite of a long trip up the outside, completed the cheque earners in fifth.
The win was Circles’ fourth in a season that has seen her capture all three of her Gold Eliminations and finish second in the first two Gold Finals of the season. In the July 11 season opening Gold Final at Grand River Raceway the filly started from Post 8 and was only half a length behind winner Witch Way at the wire, and in the July 27 Gold Final at Flamboro Downs she made a late break and again finished half a length behind winner Counter Pointe after starting from Post 7.
Bred, owned and trained by John Smith of Woodlawn, ON, the daughter of Majestic Son and super-producer Merles Image has accumulated $190,000 in six races and will have to wait until Sept. 22 to defend her Gold Final title. Boosting the filly’s odds of securing a second Gold Final trophy is the event’s location — the fourth Gold Series event will be held at her local oval, Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Mohawk Racetrack fans will also see a month-long break in Ontario Sires Stakes action while the Campbellville offers up an impressive line-up of open stake events. The provincial program returns to Mohawk on Sept. 13 with Gold Series Eliminations for the three-year-old pacing fillies.
