CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mr Joe Sixpack made his first start in the Gold Series program on Sunday, May 22 at Mohawk Racetrack and muscled his way to the fastest elimination win of the evening.
Driver Randy Waples of Milton, ON demonstrated supreme confidence in the three-year-old trotting colt, floating Mr Joe Sixpack away from Post 5 and sitting on the outside as lmperial Count rang up the early fractions of :13.1 and :27.2. Attorney Hanover stepped up to take control of the pace heading by the :57 half and reached the three-quarters in 1:26 while Waples continued to hover on the outside with Mr Joe Sixpack.
Coming out of the final turn Waples asked Mr Joe Sixpack to accelerate and the Striking Sahbra son powered down the stretch to a three-quarter length victory in 1:54.1. Imperial Count rolled into second while Undercover Strike closed hard to claim the third-place finisher’s share of the $40,000 Gold Elimination purse.
Waterdown, ON based trainer Shane Arsenault shares ownership of Mr Joe Sixpack with Brandon Arsenault of Waterdown and Louis Arsenault of Freelton, ON. The trio also joined Mr Joe Sixpack in the winner’s circle on May 13, when the colt captured his sophomore season opener at Woodbine Racetrack with a 1:55.4 effort. Both that mile and Monday’s victory were markedly faster than the 2:00 personal best Mr Joe Sixpack recorded as a two-year-old, when he captured two of seven starts.
Mr Joe Sixpack will tackle the other Gold Finalists from Post 9 next Monday, May 30.
Last year’s Super Final champion Daylon Magician opened his sophomore season in impressive fashion, wrestling the lead away from pacesetter Edit at the three-quarter marker and sprinting away to a four length victory in 1:54.4. Edit stayed game for second, holding off a charging Buckhams Bay. Over And Out finished well back in fourth, but won the draw among the fourth-place finishers and will appear in next week’s Gold Final.
Regular reinsman Jack Moiseyev of Moffat, ON engineered Daylon Magician’s fourth career victory for owner, breeder and trainer David Lemon of Komoka, ON. At two the Kadabra son posted a record of three wins, two seconds and one third in eight starts, banking $225,300 and recording an Ontario Sires Stakes record with his 1:55.3 victory in the season ending Super Final. The colt will start from Post 6 in next week’s $130,000 Gold Final.
The third Gold Elimination saw Sim Brown stick a head in front of Lakefield to steal a 1:56.2 victory from the pacesetter. Twin B Herbie was well behind the leaders in third. Randy Waples guided Angus Hall son Sim Brown to the victory for trainer Jeff Gillis of Hillsburgh, ON, Mac Nichol of Burlington, ON and Gerald Stay of Buffalo, NY, putting him in the enviable position of having two elimination winners to chose from for next week’s Gold Final.
The runner-up to Daylon Magician in last fall’s Super Final, Sim Brown tallied one win, three seconds and two thirds in 11 freshman starts, banking $143,040 for his grateful owners. The gelding will be looking for his first Gold Final victory from Post 5 next Monday.
