CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Rivals since their freshman season, pacing colts Mystician and Prodigal Seelster once again went head-to-head in Gold Final action at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday evening, engaging in a fierce stretch battle that had fans on their feet.

Starting from Post 5, Jody Jamieson — recently returned from his triumph at the World Driving Championship in the USA — hustled Mystician away from the starting gate and out to a :12.4 opening eighth with Jean Rene Plante and Machal Jackson hot on their heels. Mystician and Machal Jackson settled comfortably into first and second heading by the :27 quarter, with fan favourite Twin B Legend sitting third and Prodigal Seelster on the rail in fourth.

Paul MacDonell sent Twin B Legend after the lead heading for the :54.2 half and the gelding was still in command at the 1:22 three-quarters, but Scott Zeron and Prodigal Seelster had stepped to the outside behind him. Accelerating off the final turn, only a head separated Twin B Legend and Prodigal Seelster, and Jamieson was swinging off the rail behind them with pocket-sitter Mystician.

Twin B Legend yielded to Prodigal Seelster, and that colt fought tooth and nail as Mystician rallied on the outside, only to settle for second as Mystician was awarded the nose victory by careful inspection of the finish line photo.

Twin B Legend was two and a half lengths behind the battling leaders in third, with Machal Jackson and Cam B Zipper rounding out the money earners.

Hillsburgh resident Jeff Gillis conditions Mystician for his partners Ken Henwood of Mississauga, Mac Nichol of Burlington and Gerald Stay of Buffalo, NY. Through 10 sophomore starts the royally-bred son of Camluck and Mystic Mistress has amassed a record of three wins, four seconds and one third for earnings of $420,998, giving him a two-year total of $1,229,668.

In Gold Series competition this season Mystician, last year’s Metro Pace champion, has one Gold Elimination and one Gold Final trophy in his possession, along with a second to Twin B Legend in last week’s elimination round and a runner-up finish to Watermelonwine in the season opening Gold Final at Georgian Downs on July 9.

Mystician will begin defense of his Gold Final title at Kawartha Downs on Aug. 25, when the sophomore pacing colts make the third stop on their Gold Series tour.
