CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Ontario’s gifted two and three-year-old pacing colts put on an outstanding show at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday evening over a rain soaked surface rated one second slower than normal.

In the first freshman pacing cold Gold Elimination, BP Chimo claimed a victory in his first provincial start, touring the Campbellville oval in a personal best 1:53.4. Starting from Post 7, driver Sylvain Filion had BP Chimo on the front before the :28.2 opening quarter, but was content to hand the baton off to fan favourite Haul Away before the :57.2 half.

Haul Away led the field to a 1:26.1 three-quarters, where Filion tipped BP Chimo back to the outside. A neck in front as the pair straightened out for the stretch drive, BP Chimo pulled away to a two and three-quarter victory in 1:53.4. Western Thorn closed hard to earn the second-place share of the $40,000 Gold Elimination purse, with Haul Away hot on his heels in third. Fourth-place finisher Keystone Raptor and fifth-place finisher Adrenaline also advanced to next Saturday’s $130,000 Gold Final at Woodbine Racetrack.

James Barton trains BP Chimo for Elizabeth Thompson of Branchton and Anne O’Keefe of Ferryland, NL. Through seven starts the colt has accumulated two wins and one third for earnings of $43,500.

Filion was back in the winner’s circle after the second two-year-old pacing colt elimination, piloting another Grinfromeartoear son to victory.

Grin For Money demonstrated no ill effects from a serious bout of illness that struck following his victory in the season opening Gold Final on July 19. Starting from Post 7, Filion sat in the middle of the pack with the fan favourite before circling up three-wide at the three-quarters and sprinting down the stretch to the 1:54.3 victory.

Pacesetter Wellthereyougo finished one and three-quarter lengths back in second, with Toughest Of All another length back in third. Code Word recovered from an early interference break to finish third, and Grin For Money’s stablemate Sonic Seelster rounded out the qualifiers for next week’s Gold Final.

Milton resident John Kopas trains Grin For Money for the Grin For Money Stable of London, part of the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association’s New Owners Program. In just four lifetime starts the colt boasts three wins, one third and earnings of $110,689.

Kopas will also start a colt in the three-year-old pacing colt final, as Shipps Xpectancy finished third behind reigning Gold Final champion Fast Pay in his $40,000 elimination.

Primary Purpose carved out the fractions in the second sophomore pacing colt elimination, ringing up a :27.2 quarter, :55.2 half and 1:23.2 three-quarters. Shipps Xpectancy led the charge up the outside, but it was Fast Pay who tipped out in the stretch to score the 1:51.1 victory. Primary Purpose hit the wire two and one-quarter lengths back, with Shipps Xpectancy third. Ideal Race and Lakers Vett rounded out the qualifiers for the $130,000 Gold Final.

Three-time Gold Final winner Fast Pay is trained by Dave Menary for his father Larry Menary of Cheltenham, Denis Breton of Welland and Phil Silvestri and Joseph Settimi of Hamilton. Through 18 starts the Western Terror son has amassed seven wins, three seconds and one third for earnings of $365,600.

One More Drink made his first Ontario Sires Stakes appearance a winning one, capturing the first sophomore pacing colt elimination in a personal best 1:52.1. Mark MacDonald engineered the victory for the Western Terror gelding, who hit the wire two lengths ahead of Stonebridge Terror and Shady Cam. Pacesetters Lyons Horace and Mild Mannered also advanced to the Oct. 10 Gold Final.

Tracy Brainard conditions One More Drink for owner-breeder Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, FL. Through nine starts the gelding now has three wins, three seconds and two thirds.
