CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Aboard two different fillies, and employing two different sets of tactics, Campbellville resident Mike Saftic engineered two identical results in the three-year-old pacing filly Gold Eliminations at Mohawk Ractrack on Saturday evening.
In Race 5, the veteran reinsman floated Chancey Lady away from Post 7 and settled her seven lengths behind the leader in fifth. As Has An Attitude and A Fiesty Affair rocked through fractions of :26.3, :54.4 and 1:23.3, Saftic was content to sit on the outside in the middle of the pack and wait for the early turf battles to come to an end.
Coming around the last turn, Saftic shook Chancey Lady up a little and the pair hit the stretch just two lengths behind the filly’s former stablemate A Fiesty Affair. A strong finishing kick propelled Chancey Lady past the leader in the stretch and gave her the 1:52.3 victory by a comfortable two and a half lengths.
Gabrielles Girl shadowed Chancey Lady through the mile and earned the runner-up share of the $40,000 Gold Elimination purse, while Canadian Breeders Champion Southwind Swallow turned a patient pocket trip into a third-place cheque.
The outing was Chancey Lady’s first start for trainer John Pentland, who conditions the Camluck miss for Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, BC. Through six starts this season the talented young pacer has amassed a record of four wins, one third and one fourth in six starts, including victories in the season opening Gold Series Elimination and Final, and the $733,031 Fan Hanover Final.
Fourth and fifth-place finishers Elizamotion and A Fiesty Affair will join the top three fillies in next weekend’s $120,000 Gold Final.
In the second elimination Saftic opted to roll Im Just Special off the gate from Post 4, control the fractions through a :27.2 opening quarter, a :56.2 half and a 1:24.4 three-quarters, and then sprint home. The filly hit the wire in the same time as Chancey Lady, 1:52.3, and an identical distance ahead of the field, two and one-half lengths. Longshot Ms Goliath laid down a :26.2 last quarter to finish second, with All Accounted For five and a half lengths to the rear in third.
The reigning Gold Final champion, Im Just Special is owned by Theodore and Susan Colby of Bronxville, NY and trained by Tom Artandi. The daughter of Camluck and Ladys Special Girl now has seven wins, four seconds and two thirds to her credit in 15 starts this season, and sits second in the points race for a berth in the lucrative Super Final.
Joining Im Just Special, Ms Goliath and All Accounted For in the Aug. 9 Gold Final are fourth and fifth-place finishers Style Semalu and Georgia Peach, who is owned by Chris Christoforou, Sr. of Campbellville and Banjo Farms of Toronto.
The top five finishers from each elimination will reconvene at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday, Aug. 9 for the third $120,000 Gold Final on their schedule this summer. The fillies will line up behind Mohawk’s starting gate as follows:
